Sunday wonders - A

A is for Adventure.

These are some of the last minutes of our Newfoundland adventure.  I am now at home but my body hasn't quite caught up.  It still thinks its a few thousand kilometers away.  A new adventure starts today with yet another round of my Sunday alphabet series.  I can't quite give it up.

Here are a few photos that were in the camera when we got home.  These heads and butts are actually working at an archaeological dig.  This is the site of a settlement of ancient people who came to hunt the seals.  They think it was a sort of summer camp.  It must be fun to get out in the field and have that thrill of discovery.

On the way to the site we passed some trees with these beautiful cones.  I've been trying to discover what kind of trees but so far no success.  The sap oozes out the top and shines like diamonds in the sun.  Just gorgeous.

Ghost trees by the sea.  The salt air and the constant wind has such a scouring effect that these remains may not be as old as they look.  No idea why this patch dies.  Some things just don't get the signage.

These are the arches which give The Arches Provincial Park its name.

And just another beautiful view looking north from those arches.

If you ever doubted that Newfoundland is an island of rock you only have to look at how many of the utility poles are planted this way.  A drive-by shot.

And, at the end, we take our various long trails home.  It's been a most wonderful vacation.  I know we'll go back.  We're already planning it.

I can see your mind is still in the east. I love the photos, but that pine cone picture is amazing. It looks like a cabbage!

Hubby and I did a little conferring over conifers (!) and decided your pine cone looks like Abies lasiocarpa or a white balsam. There's a picture of the immature pine cones here: http://www.conifers.org/pi/Abies_lasiocarpa.php
Sounds like you had an awesome time on the rock... lucky you and welcome home!
